Having watched my grandmother sit in her window for years giving a running commentary on the happenings in the neighborhood, I wanted to create a pastel painting that gave the viewer a first hand account of what other in the neighborhood saw when they passed my grandmothers 2-flat. From the traditional red-brick buildings found throughout the South side of Chicago, I wanted to focus more on the overall picture then get caught up in smaller details. At first glance one gets the impression that the neighborhood is policed by committee, and anything that happens soon becomes public knowledge.
